They are made from a sturdy, clear plastic material that is quite comfortable compared to those old-fashioned (and in my experience, pre-chilled) metal ones that were used in "the old days". The clear material also allows for as much light as possible to enter, but more importantly, it's transparent so you can see the walls of the pussy/ass through it!

The mechanical workings of each speculum are pretty simple... you lube it up, and then insert it in your partner's (or your own) pussy in its "collapsed" state. Once inserted, there are two methods for opening it up... the first is that the two halves are hinged and by squeezing the handle together, it opens the halves via the hinge. After that, there is a track that one of the halves may slide down so that it puts even more distance between it and the other half (opening the pussy even more). There are several friction-detents along the track to keep the speculum 'locked' open (otherwise the pussy would just squeeze it shut as soon as you let go).

The anoscope is pretty straightforward too... it's a clear, tapered tube with the smaller end open, and with a piece that fits down inside the tube to provide a nice, smooth end during insertion. Once inside, you pull the inner piece out and then you can see in! Pretty easy.
