NTSC PAL Video Formats

A note on NTSC and PAL video formats:
If you are in the USA: don't worry about the format... unless requested otherwise, I ship USA-standard-format tapes on VHS cassettes by default. They will play in any ordinary VCR sold in the USA.

Outside the USA: All of my videos are duplicated on standard VHS tapes (this refers to the the type of physical tape cassette). All videos on my site are available in NTSC format, (USA, Canada, as well as other areas). Many titles, but not all, are also available in PAL format (the standard in some of Europe, Australia, as well as other areas). Just look at the top of the page for a particular video and if it has the PAL logo, I have it in PAL format. PAL costs more to duplicate here in the US, since it isn't the standard, so there is an additional fee of $5 per tape for PAL-format videos. Currently, I do not have any videos in SECAM format.
(An exception on the NTSC/PAL logos: Mardi Gras tapes, where the some volumes may only be available in NTSC)

When I started offering video tapes in PAL format as well as NTSC format, I received many questions in regard to the differing video standards in use in the world. So here is some additional information on the matter.

Due to historical reasons, there are different and (mostly) incompatible methods of broadcasting and recording video/television signals in use throughout the world. The three major standards are known as:

1.)
NTSC
National Television Standards Commitee
Developed USA
2.)
PAL
Phase Alternating Line
Developed UK/Germany
3.)
SECAM
Systèm Électronique pour Couleur avec Mémoire
Developed France

As I understand it, the standard in use in a given country was determined at some point by the government in place at the time. For the most part, broadcast TV (and later videotape) followed whatever standard was instituted. With an increasingly large installed-base of television receivers and videotape machines, the selected standard then became entrenched. What is important in regard to my videos is what format your country (and presumably your video tape player) uses.

If you are in the US or Canada, it's simple... the format is NTSC.
If you are in the UK and Australia, the format is PAL.
Most Western European Countries are PAL.
France is SECAM, unfortunately.

If you don't know what format is in use in your country, use the following links to help you find out:

Here is a list of format by country.

That should be quite enough about the format of the video signal. The physical tape medium that all my videos are recorded on is VHS, which has become the overwhelming standard medium for video rentals and sales in the US. Both NTSC and PAL video formats can be recorded on a VHS tape.

Here is the logo that identifies a machine that plays VHS tapes:

So in terms of my videos, here is a summary: They are recorded on VHS tapes. I have them all in NTSC format. I also have many of them in PAL format.
